TESTED: VOLVO XC60... KING OF THE CROSS-OVERS

I have always liked Volvos. They are sensible, reliable, and safe. They are the kind of cars that you buy when you have a family, a dog, and a mortgage. They are not the kind of cars that you buy when you want to have fun, thrill, and adventure. Or so I thought. Allow me to introduce you to the Volvo XC60. A paradigm-shifting crossover that not only embraces safety, but distinguishes itself from the rest through clever Swedish design and innovation.

Let's kick things off with the design. The XC60 B5 is a feast for the eyes, a smorgasbord of sleek lines and understated elegance. It's got that distinctive Euro flair, like a well-tailored suit – simple, classy, and effortlessly cool. The LED headlights, resembling Thor's hammer, illuminate the road ahead with a subtle nod to Norse mythology. It's a design philosophy that says, "I'm safe, I'm sophisticated, and I'm not afraid to have a bit of fun."

Slip inside the cabin, and you'll find yourself enveloped in an atmosphere of Swedish serenity. The interior is a masterclass in minimalist luxury, with high-quality materials and a layout that exudes a sense of calm. The dashboard is a symphony of clean lines, and the attention to detail is borderline obsessive. Soft-touch materials abound, and the leather seats – oh, the leather seats – cradle you like a Swedish massage after a long day. A stark contrast to boring square Volvo’s of old.

Now, let's talk tech. The XC60 B5 is a veritable playground for gadget enthusiasts. The 9-inch Sensus touchscreen infotainment system takes centre stage, and it's as intuitive as an Ikea flat pack. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are there to keep your smartphone in sync, making you wonder how you ever survived without them; It was actually quite upsetting when I had to give the car back. The Bowers & Wilkins sound system turns your daily commute into a private concert, with crisp highs and deep, thumping lows that rival the bass drop at a techno festival.

But the real showstopper is Volvo's arsenal of safety tech (as per usual). The XC60 B5 is like having an extra set of eyes pointing in almost every direction. The Pilot Assist system, a semi-autonomous driving feature, keeps you cantered in your lane and maintains a safe distance from the car ahead. The City Safety package is like a watchful parent, ready to intervene if you get too close to that lamppost while parallel parking. After driving the Volvo for a while, you start to realise how insane other drivers are. I call this the Volvo effect.

Now, let's address the driving experience. The XC60 B5 is not just about looking good and feeling safe; it's about what’s under the hood. The B5 variant is powered by a potent combination of a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and an electric motor, delivering a surprisingly punchy performance that belies its eco-friendly credentials. The power delivery is smooth, and the eight-speed automatic transmission shifts with a seamless grace that would even make a Rolls Royce driver jealous.

Acceleration is brisk, the Volvo definitley packs a punch, especially with the throaty sound it produces. The regenerative braking system, often a Achilles' heel in hybrids, is commendably smooth in the XC60 B5.

On the road, the XC60 handles like a dream. The suspension strikes a delicate balance between comfort and sportiness, gliding over potholes with a nonchalant ease that makes you forget you're driving on anything less than a cloud. The steering is precise, and the overall driving dynamics inspire confidence, whether you're navigating city streets or tackling winding mountain roads.

Now, let's address the elephant in the room – or should I say the moose on the road? The XC60 B5, for all its merits, does come with a few interesting quirks. The infotainment system, while mostly user-friendly, can be a tad sluggish at times. This would be fine if the screen wasn’t so sensitive to touch. Operating the climate control, or other driver features can be temperamental at times, especially when driving. The last gripe that I have with this car is a little hard to describe in words. The XC60 is a little too easy. While driving, I felt like the whole experience was all done for me. It felt like Volvo has put the steering wheel, and pedals there as a placebo while the car’s brain does all the real driving for me. Of course, all the driver aids can be turned off, but the underlying feeling of disconnectedness is still there. This shouldn’t matter if you’re looking at this car as a family car, but if you’re a reformed hooligan petrolhead looking for a more grown-up car to keep the drive into work exciting, I’d suggest a more powerful engine spec, or a Volvo S90 (Cough Cough* or an Audi).

The back seat, while spacious, may leave taller passengers yearning for a bit more legroom. It's not a deal-breaker by any means, but if you're regularly chauffeuring a basketball team, you might want to consider the XC90 instead.

The 2024 Volvo XC60 B5 is a triumph of Swedish design and technological wizardry. It's a crossover that doesn't just drive; it glides. From the sleek exterior to the serene interior, and the tech-laden cockpit to the joyous driving experience, the XC60 B5 is a harmonious blend of form and function. Sure, it has its quirks, but don't we all? Consider this Volvo a stylish, safety-conscious companion that's ready to make every journey an enjoyable (Safe) adventure.
