TROYE SIVAN DRAGGED US ALL IN HIS LATEST MUSIC VIDEO

It’s a sad bop in synth pop.

Troye Sivan’s One Of Your Girls music video blessed us with the gift we never knew we needed - Troye in drag.

The Australian singer-songwriter’s album Something to Give Each Other dropped earlier this month, along with possibly the most surprising and exciting music video of the year. Wowing us all, Troye appeared in a lush lace front wig and full glam makeup by YSL Beauty, and her wardrobe included classy furs and a slinky slip dress.

Ahead of its release, Troye counted down the days to the music video on his Instagram. He was already hinting at drag - posing lavishly in a chair, you could spot red fishnets and white heels under an unassuming blue tee. The caption read “this is my favorite song”, with a broken heart emoji.

And the video itself? Stunning. Troye in drag exudes pure femininity and sensuality while she dances along a barre to the hi-hat beats, and leaves fans blushing with her cheeky flirts towards the camera.

The video starts in black and white with Troye out of drag, almost whispering the lyrics to the camera (suuuper sultry). He wears a Rush t-shirt, referencing another hit song on the album, and a Star of David, further emphasizing how the album explores his queer and Jewish identities. Then the video changes. With quick cuts of Yves Saint Laurent lipstick, thigh-high socks, and a wink, Troye appears effortlessly glamorous in drag for the chorus.

Along with Troye looking like the most beautiful 90s supermodel ever, we have Ross Lynch playing the object of Troye’s affections, rocking classic jeans and a tousled look. The actor-singer is undoubtedly a heartthrob for many of us, and since the music video dropped Ross has been engaging in some TikTok flirtation with Troye.

First, Troye posted a TikTok with a heart-eyes filter to show how he felt about Ross Lynch being “available to shoot”. Ross stitched the video with the same filter, dancing on a beach and shooting a finger gun at the camera. Behind the scenes videos on Troye’s page reveal Ross doing push-ups before his scene, and Troye in drag taking a nervous sip from her water bottle.

Whatever’s going on, we’re loving it. Seeing the singers flirt this way over social media after such a steamy music video really amps up the spice. But the last lyric Troye sings reveals the deeper meaning of the song.

Troye lip syncs, “Give me a call if you ever get desperate”, shrouded in luxurious furs during a zoomed-in shot of her face. She conveys raw loneliness and desire here, which transforms the project from a sexy pop song into something more deep and introspective.

Troye describes the song as “a reflection on attraction, identity, and my own vulnerabilities”, which shines through in the vocoded chorus. This makes the otherwise sweet song sound like “this sort of sad robot”, yearning for connection. It’s heartbreakingly personal, but so gorgeous, which is what we’ve come to expect from Troye’s work.

Something to Give Each Other explores love in all its forms, unrequited or not. It’s an exploration of sexuality, anxiety, and relationships all wrapped up in magical pop. Troye Sivan has shown us again how he’s matured as an artist, and that he can absolutely serve in drag.
