THE JENIFER LOPEZ VANITY MOVIE... HUH?

Jennifer Lopez's latest project, "This is Me... Now," arrives with much fanfare, but unfortunately, it falls short of expectations. While boasting an exorbitant budget and a star-studded cast, the film and accompanying album ultimately come across as a misguided exercise in vanity rather than a genuine exploration of artistry.

With a reported production cost of $20 million, "This is Me... Now" is one of the most expensive passion projects in recent memory. However, the sheer extravagance of the budget seems to have overshadowed any semblance of artistic integrity. From elaborate sets to celebrity cameos, the film is awash in opulence, but it struggles to justify its astronomical price tag.

One of the most glaring issues with "This is Me... Now" is its disjointed storytelling. The film feels as though no two parts were filmed in the same room, let alone the same universe. Scenes transition abruptly, with little regard for continuity or coherence, leaving viewers disoriented and disconnected from the narrative. What begins as a promising exploration of love and self-discovery quickly devolves into a haphazard collection of disjointed vignettes, lacking any sense of cohesion or purpose.

Adding to the film's sense of disarray is its inconsistent use of animation and CGI. While some sequences are visually stunning and seamlessly integrated into the narrative, others feel jarringly out of place, with poorly rendered effects that detract from the viewing experience. It's as if the filmmakers couldn't decide whether to embrace the fantastical elements of the story or ground it in reality, resulting in a mishmash of styles that never quite gel.

Despite its narrative and visual shortcomings, "This is Me... Now" does have its moments of brilliance. Jennifer Lopez shines in her role, bringing depth and emotion to a character that is thinly written at best. Her musical performances are electrifying, showcasing her undeniable talent and charisma. Likewise, the film's soundtrack, featuring tracks from Lopez's ninth studio album, is a highlight, injecting much-needed energy and emotion into an otherwise lackluster experience.

However, these fleeting moments of excellence are not enough to redeem "This is Me... Now" from its fundamental flaws. The film's reliance on celebrity cameos feels forced and gratuitous, serving as distractions rather than enhancements to the story. Similarly, its self-indulgent tendencies, from the multiple alternative album covers to the behind-the-scenes documentary chronicling Lopez's every move, only serve to reinforce the sense of vanity that pervades the entire project.

"This is Me... Now" is a lavish misfire that squanders its considerable resources on empty spectacle and disjointed storytelling. While Jennifer Lopez may have set out to create a heartfelt exploration of her life and loves, the end result is a bloated and self-indulgent mess. With its lackluster storytelling, inconsistent visual effects, and superficiality, the film serves as a cautionary tale of the perils of unchecked vanity in the entertainment industry.
