TESTED: KIA EV9 - HIGH VOLTAGE HIGH ENERGY

Now, I preface this entire review by admitting that the phrase "electric SUV" usually fills me with dread. These leviathans lumber around, sucking electrons and boasting all the excitement of a particularly sluggish refrigerator. But Kia, bless their ambitious hearts, has thrown a rather large spanner in the works with the 2024 EV9.

Here's the thing: it's not bad. In fact, it's good. Nay, very good. Let's delve into the electric abyss and see if this Kia can climb out with its dignity, and my enthusiasm, intact.

Looks: Not Exactly Subtle

Kia hasn't exactly been shy with the EV9's design. It's a big, bold thing, all sharp creases and a grille that, thankfully, serves no purpose other than aesthetics. The pop-out door handles are a neat touch, and the overall silhouette is undeniably modern. Think "spaceship on a ski trip" and you're on the right track.

Those Stats: WhatLurks Within

The EV9 comes in two flavors: the rear-wheel-drive standard model and the all-wheel-drive GT-Line. The standard gets a 76.1-kWh battery pack, offering a very respectable 230 miles of range, while the GT-Line bumps that up to a 99.8-kWh pack with a 270-mile range. Both models can be had with either one or two electric motors, with the GT-Line boasting a sprightly 576 horsepower in its top spec.

Now, before you scoff, remember this is a hulking SUV. But 0-60 mph in a claimed 5.2 seconds for the GT-Line? That's hot hatchback territory, people. And let's not forget the towing capacity – a mighty 5,000 pounds, which is more than enough for most trailers or even a decent-sized boat.

The Drive: Surprisingly Sorted

Getting behind the wheel is where the EV9 truly surprised me. The electric motors deliver instant torque, shoving you back in your seat with surprising urgency. Plant your foot and there's a satisfying surge of power, all delivered in that eerie silence that's become the hallmark of electric vehicles.

Thankfully, Kia hasn't forgotten about handling. The EV9 corners with a surprising degree of composure, thanks in part to its low center of gravity courtesy of those under-floor battery packs. It won't win any awards for agility, but for a car of its size, it inspires a surprising amount of confidence on twisty roads. The ride quality is excellent, soaking up bumps and imperfections with aplomb. Even on larger wheels, the EV9 manages to avoid the jarring harshness often associated with SUVs.

Interior: A Symphony of Space

Step inside, and you're greeted by a cabin that's both spacious and thoughtfully designed. The use of recycled materials feels suitably virtuous without compromising on quality. The massive panoramic sunroof adds to the airy feel, while the high seating position provides excellent outward visibility.

Kia has thankfully resisted the urge to clutter the dashboard with buttons. Most functions are controlled via a clear and responsive touchscreen infotainment system, with physical buttons for essential functions like climate control remaining – a small but appreciated detail in a world obsessed with touchscreens.

The hero of the interior, though, is the third-row seating. Unlike many token third rows in SUVs, the EV9's actually offers usable space for adults, making it a genuine seven-seater. This, combined with the ample cargo space behind the third row, makes the EV9 a compelling option for families who need both practicality and electric virtue.

The Verdict: A Strong Contender

So, the 2024 Kia EV9. Is it perfect? No car is. But it's damn good. It's practical, spacious, surprisingly fun to drive, and offers a decent range. It's not the most cutting-edge design, but it's handsome in a muscular sort of way.

If you're looking for an electric SUV that can handle family duty without sacrificing performance or practicality, then the EV9 deserves a serious look. It's a sign that electric SUVs are finally growing up, and Kia is leading the charge. Just don't expect this spaceship to blend into the background – it was built to be noticed.
