TESTED: GENESIS G70 - BM(WHO?)

Genesis G70: A Thoroughbred Disguised as a Dark Horse

Now, I typically scoff at these upstarts trying to muscle in on the German luxury car market. But the 2024 Genesis G70? Well, that's a different story altogether. Here's a Korean car that not only competes, it challenges. Dare I say, it eclipses, in certain areas.

Let's dispel with the pleasantries first. The G70 is a looker. It's got that low-slung, aggressive stance that screams "performance" without the boy-racer gaudiness. The twin headlights with the signature Genesis crest are sharp and distinctive, and the overall design language is cohesive and elegant. It's a car that won't get lost in a valet lot full of German badges.

But a pretty face is only half the story, isn't it? Thankfully, the G70 backs up its looks with some serious muscle. You get a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 that puts down a gut-punching 375 horsepower. Both engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, with the option of rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

Now, I had the pleasure, some might say misfortune for my bank account, of spending a week with the V6 monster. And let me tell you, it's a proper sleeper. This thing sprints from 0 to 60 in a scant 4.7 seconds. That's neck-and-neck with some serious German machinery. But the joy of the G70 goes beyond just stoplight heroics.

The real magic happens on winding roads. The steering is sharp and communicative, giving you a delightful sense of connection to the car. The chassis is stiff and responsive, holding its ground through even the most aggressive cornering. It's a car that begs to be pushed, that rewards a spirited driving style.

Here's where the G70 truly separates itself from the pack. It manages to be both sporty and surprisingly comfortable. The suspension soaks up bumps and imperfections without sacrificing handling. You can carve up a canyon road with a grin, then settle in for a long highway cruise without feeling like your fillings are about to rattle loose.

Of course, a luxury car isn't just about performance. The interior of the G70 is a testament to Genesis' dedication to quality. The materials are top-notch, with soft leather, beautiful wood accents, and a general feeling of solidity that puts some German rivals to shame. The design is clean and uncluttered, with a focus on ergonomics and functionality.

The infotainment system is a breeze to use, with a large touchscreen that responds quickly and a menu layout that's intuitive. The standard features list is impressive, with goodies like a panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated seats, a premium sound system, and a comprehensive suite of driver assistance features.

Now, there are a couple of niggles. The back seat is a bit tight on headroom, especially for taller passengers. And some of the physical buttons have been replaced by touch-sensitive controls for the climate system, which can be a bit finicky at times. But these are minor quibbles in the grand scheme of things.

Overall, the 2024 Genesis G70 is a phenomenal car. It's stylish, it's fast, it's comfortable, and it's loaded with features. It offers a compelling alternative to the established German luxury brands, all at a price that's significantly more attractive. So, if you're looking for a sports sedan that delivers on all fronts, the Genesis G70 deserves a serious look. You might just surprise yourself with what this Korean thoroughbred can do.
