FASHION IN 2023... WRAPPED

The year 2023 was a tumultuous one for the world, but also a creative one for fashion. From the resurgence of Y2K styles to the emergence of new aesthetics, 2023 saw a variety of trends that reflected the mood and spirit of the times. Here are some of the most notable fashion trends that happened over 2023.

1. Red

The colour of passion, power, and confidence, red dominated the runways and the streets in 2023. Whether it was a monochromatic look, a statement piece, or a pop of colour, red was the hue to wear to stand out and make an impression. Designers like Stella McCartney, Ester Manas, and Elie Saab showcased red in different shades and styles, from cool-toned separates to warm-toned fringes.

2. Peplum

The peplum, a flared ruffle that extends from the waist or hips, made a comeback in 2023, adding some flair and femininity to outfits. The peplum was not limited to tops, but also appeared on skirts, dresses, and jackets, in various fabrics and patterns. Some of the brands that embraced the peplum trend were Moschino, Christopher Kane, and Paco Rabanne.

3. Tea-length skirts

The tea-length skirt, which falls between the knee and the ankle, was a popular choice for fall and winter, offering a balance between elegance and comfort. The tea-length skirt had a flirty and playful vibe, with pleats, ruffles, and prints adding some movement and texture. Prada, Dior, and Chloé were some of the labels that featured tea-length skirts in their collections.

4. Olive oil green

A creamy, yellowish green that can range from subtle to vibrant, olive oil green was a fresh and versatile color trend in 2023. Olive oil green could be paired with neutrals, pastels, or brights, depending on the desired effect. It also worked well with different fabrics and styles, from leather to knitwear, from casual to formal. A.W.A.K.E Mode, Tod's, and Luisa Spagnoli were some of the brands that incorporated olive oil green into their designs.

5. Slouchy bags

As the world became more mobile and dynamic, so did the bags. Slouchy bags, which are large, soft, and unstructured, were the preferred accessory for carrying all the essentials and more. Slouchy bags came in different shapes, colors, and materials, from leather to canvas, from solid to printed. They also added some personality and attitude to any outfit, as seen in the collections of Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, and Jacquemus.

6. Biker jackets

The biker jacket, a classic staple of rock and roll and rebel culture, was a must-have item in 2023, adding some edge and coolness to any look. The biker jacket was not only worn with jeans and boots, but also with dresses and skirts, creating a contrast between tough and soft. The biker jacket also came in different variations, from leather to denim, from black to colorful. Some of the brands that reinvented the biker jacket were Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, and Isabel Marant.

These were some of the biggest fashion trends of 2023, a year of nostalgia and experimentation. Fashion in 2023 was a reflection of the diversity and creativity of the people, who expressed themselves through their clothes and accessories. As we look forward to 2024, we can expect to see more trends that challenge and inspire us.
