BRITNEY SPEARS... ON HER OWN TERMS

Britney Spears was under a conservatorship for more than 13 years. This legal arrangement was incredibly controversial, and allowed her father Jamie Spears to control her freedom and finances. Three months after the termination of her conservatorship in 2021, news broke about the singer’s upcoming memoir, worth $15 million.

The Woman In Me is set to be released on the 24th of October, 2023. The memoir will be published by Galley Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, and will cover her rise to fame, the tense relationship with her family and the battle to end her conservatorship. The title seemingly relates to her hit song from 2001, “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman”, which could be referencing the lack of control she has faced over her own life. Less than 24 hours after the book announcement on Page Six, it skyrocketed to the top of the Amazon bestseller list.

The star will open up about the “impact of sharing her voice - her truth” in court, both how it affected herself and others, and she will explore the “power of music and love”. On Instagram, Britney shared the release date of her memoir, along with the statement that “it’s coming, my story, on my terms, at last”. She has also opened up about how she “had a lot of therapy to get this book done”, highlighting the trauma that she has faced, and the difficulty that came with approaching it head on in the writing process.

The book will be a “brave and astonishingly moving story about freedom, fame, motherhood survival, faith and hope” according to her publisher. This bombshell novel “illuminates the enduring power of music and love — and the importance of a woman telling her own story”.

Whilst her conservatorship has ended, Britney is still estranged from her parents and sister, who continue to deny any wrongdoing. Her sister, Jamie Lynn, released her own book “Things I Should Have Said”, in which she made scathing claims that left Britney fuming. The star responded to this novel via her social media, naming her sister scum and a liar, and her lawyer issued a cease-and-desist to Jamie Lynn, asserting that Britney will “no longer be bullied” by her family. Britney also took to Instagram to declare that she has an abundance of stories about family members that sat by, observing but not helping, throughout her gruelling conservatorship.

The singer has been nothing but open about her conservatorship. Whilst she is still entangled in a legal battle with her father, who is requesting that she pays his legal fees (despite the conservatorship ending), Britney continuously vocalises how she was mistreated whilst her father had control over her personal, professional and financial matters. She shared in an Instagram video that she’s “not here to be a victim”, and that she simply wants “to be an advocate for people with real disabilities and real illnesses” who have also faced negative experiences under conservatorship. After her emotional court address in June 2021 which sparked the #FreeBritney movement, there has been an ongoing conversation about potential abuses in the conservator system. The star addressed this discussion as she expressed “Hopefully, my story will make an impact and make some changes in this corrupt system.”

“Britney’s compelling testimony in open court shook the world, changed laws, and showed her inspiring strength and bravery,” Jennifer Bergstrom, Gallery Books Senior Vice President and Publisher, disclosed in a statement to People. “I have no doubt her memoir will have a similar impact — and will be the publishing event of the year. We couldn’t be more proud to help her share her story at last.”
